More 2013 Events For Your Hawaii Vacation

by Fergy Ferguson

You all know that finding More 2013 Events For Your Hawaii Vacation is easy.  I usually try to focus on either a single month, or a 3 month period in these lists that I compile for you.  These events are in addition to some of the more regular things, like farmers markets, or culinary tours that occur on a regular basis.

Starting around March 15th, many islands begin to have lots of things going on.  For those going to Kauai, one thing that you should try to attend is The HANALEI SLACK KEY GUITAR & UKULELE CONCERT.  This is where you can really get the best of both worlds.  First you get to see the magical Hanalei, and second you get to listen to the best slack key, and ukulele music in all the Hawaiian Islands.  Following up in late May on Kauai is The KAUAI POLYNESIAN FESTIVAL, to be held on the Memorial Day weekend.  This festival will give you the opportunity to participate and view all sorts of Polynesian cultural events.  Look for Tahitian, Maori, Samoan and Hawaiian entertainment.  You will also have a chance to see plenty of arts and crafts, a farmers market, and lots of great food and dance.

Coming up on Oahu is a very unique event that will please the “picker” in all of those antique hunters out there.  The WIKI WIKI ONE DAY VINTAGE COLLECTIBLES & HAWAIIANA SHOW.  Held on March 24th, this event is the only all vintage (20 yrs & older) collectibles and antiques show and sale.  If you are looking for all things Hawaiian to collect, this is the place to be.  Also coming up on Oahu is one of the most popular, and unique events that is celebrating it’s 11th year.  The 11TH ANNUAL WAIKIKI SPAM JAM STREET FESTIVAL is a festival that accomplishes 2 main things.  The first is you will be amazed at all the good eats you can prepare with Spam.  The second is that Kalakaua Avenue is closed to car traffic for the event, and two entertainment stages and a variety of Hawaiian crafters are set up on the street.  The event is free and fun for all.

On the Island of Maui, there is always something going on, and I suggest you check out the “Friday’s” celebrations that happen in 4 different towns throughout each month.  In addition, Maui has become a magnet for big name entertainment.  Bonnie Raitt, Bill Cosby, Santana, and James Taylor are appearing at The Maui Arts & Cultural Center over the next few months.  The last thing I want to point out happening on Maui in the beginning of May is a music festival being held over several days, in several South Maui locations.  The MAUI CLASSICAL MUSIC FESTIVAL gives you the opportunity to hear world class classical music, and explore South Maui too.

On Hawaii Island (Big Island), we have one of the most important cultural events in the Hawaiian Islands happening at the end of March into early April.  The MERRIE MONARCH FESTIVAL is an event that, if you can manage to get a ticket, will fill you with the spirit of Aloha.  As you watch the best halau’s present their best dance programs for an elite judging, you can’t help but be filled with a love for the art form we know as hula.  Hawaii Island is also home to another event that I have not attended, but my family says should be my next stop. The North Kohala district is host to The 2ND ANNUAL BIG ISLAND CHOCOLATE FESTIVAL.  Do I really need to say anything else??  I love that they are counting down by minutes to the start of the festival…..

Hopefully, this is a great little primer on unique and fun things to do on Your Seattle to Hawaii Vacation.

A hui ho…
