Trouble in paradise? News of Island Air pulling out of the West Maui Kapalua Airport does not bode well for an airport that has had it’s ups and downs. According to news reports out of all the major news outlets in Hawaii, Island Air will end service to Kapalua on May 31st of this year.
I am a little confused here. About 10 days ago an article came out from The Honolulu Star Advertiser that basically said that Larry Ellison, the new owner of Island Air and 98% of the island of Lanai, was trying to make sure that the inter-island airline stayed in the market. According to a phone interview with Paul Marinelli, Lawrence Investments LLC Vice President, “Island Air will remain an inter-island carrier, Marinelli said. The company has no plans for direct flights outside Hawaii, but it plans to increase service to airports it currently flies to on Molokai, Maui, Kauai, Oahu, the Big Island and Lanai.”
Increase flights to airports it currently flies? I think someone got the facts wrong here. It is a shame, the Kapalua airport is much more friendly an airport to fly in and out of, and the flights on Island Air were always my favorites. I hope this doesn’t put the airport back on the skids again……
A hui ho….
