Prince Course Is Finally Opened Again On Kauai

by Fergy Ferguson

As of March 1,  Princeville’s Prince Course is finally opened again on Kauai.  It has been a long 13 months since it was closed for a long planned renovation.  Time will tell whether the course remains the number 1 course in Hawaii.  No early reviews yet, but I am sure we will get a good feel about whether the re-do was successful in a month or two.

According to several articles I have read, the idea behind this was to make the course friendlier to the average golfer.  According to the stories, the design firm of Robert Trent Jones II, Golf Course Architects, was to expand the tee selections, move and refurbish some bunkers, and expand the practice facilities.  There was also a push to give golfers the option, via their tee box selctions, to take some of the teeth out of the course to make the round even more enjoyable than it already was.  Another thing they worked on was to mow the fairways wider, and to reshape some of the fairways to give better landing areas to a broader base of golfers.

I played the course in it’s prime, and I will tell you that it was not only challenging, but it was one of the most beautiful rounds of golf I have ever played.  The scenery was fantastic, and the course was tough, but fair.  Let’s hope that all they have done has maintained this course in all it’s glory, and still left a layout for those that want to challenge themselves.  I look forward to playing it again as soon as I can.
