My Favorite Hawaii Golf Courses on Maui

by Fergy Ferguson

Yes, my favorite Hawaii golf courses on Maui are ones that I have played many times.  This year I vow to try a couple of new courses on my fall vacation.  A couple of these courses you have probably seen plenty of times on TV, but one of them is a favorite because it’s just a little different than the standard Hawaii golf course.

The course I play most often is The Plantation Course at Kapalua.  One of the reasons I like this course is that it can play dramatically different each time you tee it up.  If you play a morning round, it can actually be a fun and relaxing round as the wind generally is not a factor.  Play an afternoon round on the same day and you can have a tiger by the tail here, with the winds (and maybe some Mauka showers thrown in) having you take up to 3 clubs different than you did in the morning round.  Challenging, great views, and you can play a round with some golf celebrities without even realizing it.

Another course I play often is The Dunes At Maui Lani.  My buddy Kevin and I used to play this every year until he moved off the island.  We always enjoyed the variety of terrain and how there were several places on the course where you could almost forget you were in Hawaii.  We played a couple different sets of tees here and you should know that the tips will eat most peoples lunch.  When we found our tees though, we both settled in and had great rounds that we always enjoyed.  I highly suggest this layout for those that want to try something a little different.

The last place I play often is The Royal Kaanapali Course in Kaanapali. This is what I call a perfect resort course that you can really get into the Hawaii golf experience.  The elevation changes make this course interesting, and challenging too.  Those same elevation changes give you spectacular views, along with a little something to think about when you are putting.  This is resort golf the way it should be, grab a cold one from the cart, take in the views, swing easy, and just enjoy.

The last place I want to talk about is a rresort I stayed in last fall, but I did not get to play another of my favorite courses.  The Makena Golf Course is a track that I also really enjoy as a resort course.  This layout affords you a bunch of risk & reward shots that you really have to think about.  It also has many views that you will never forget.  I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you that The Makena Golf & Beach Resort is one of the few remaining resorts that has a true unlimited golf package available.  This resort itself sits at the end of the road in south Maui and has one of the best beaches around with great snorkeling too….need I say more….
