Hawaii Gets Ready For The Pro Golf Tournaments

by Fergy Ferguson

It’s that time of the year again when Hawaii gets ready for the pro golf tournaments coming up.  All the US major tours are represented in Hawaii, with 2 PGA events, 2 Champions Tour Events, and a popular LPGA tour event scheduled for 2012.  As most golf fans are aware of, the season begins in Hawaii with a winners only field at Kapalua, and a full field event on Oahu.

If you are in Hawaii when either of these events are occurring, you can often find yourself sitting next to a pro golfer and his family in the same restaurant you have chosen to eat at.  That’s not the only fun thing about golf in Hawaii.  These tournaments often offer tickets to the events for a much more reasonable price than you would imagine.  Many of these tournaments have day tickets for $15.00…… So here’s a schedule of what’s coming up.

The first on the list is The Hyundai Tournament of Champions, for winners of 2012 tournaments only.  This event is held at the Kapalua Plantation Course January 6th to January 9th, 2013.  This is my favorite golf course in Maui.  The views are stunning, and the golf can be either gentle on your game, or brutal when the wind blows.  That is one of the reasons we can see really low scores one day at this tournament, and really high the next.

The next tournament, a full field event, is The Sony Open, at the Waialae Country Club on Oahu.  This event has a rich history, including allowing a young local lady golfer, Michelle Wie, the chance to try and win a men’s tournament.  What I have always liked about this tournament is that we usually get a good glimpse of who will start out the season on a positive note.  Last years winner, Johnson Wagner, had a blazing start to his PGA season and ended up 20th in the FEDEX Cup standings.

The first Champions Tour Event, The Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai, will be held at The Hualalai Golf Course in Ka’upulehu-Kona, on Hawaii’s Big Island.  The tournament dates are January 20th to 22nd, 2012.  This is another of my favorite golf courses in Hawaii which I have not played in awhile.  I look forward to playing it next year on a business trip I am planning.  Last years winner, John Cook, was another golfer who put together a good season due to a great starting tourney for the year.

In April you get a premier LPGA field at The LPGA LOTTE Championship on Oahu.  The Ko’Olina Golf Club is a great setting for this event, and for those Disney fans, Aulani is also on the grounds of The Ko’Olina Resort.  I was able to watch a few holes at this event when I was doing several hotel inspections in the resort last year, and all I have to say is that these women are scary good.  If you are in the islands during this tournament, make an effort to go see them.

The final full field event,The Pacific Links Championship, is actually a new Champions Tour stop in September at the stunning Kapolei course on Oahu.  This is another golf course that I have wanted to play for a long time, and when you look at the pictures, you will see why.  Not only does this look like a great course, it looks like you will have to keep an extra sleeve or two just for the water hazards.  Willie Wood won his second tourney of the year here in 2012, and hopes that his stellar play transfers over to Kona in January 2013.

Well, that’s a pretty good line-up for Hawaii golf in 2013……

A hui ho…
